What has me excited for Warcraft is how unabashedly nerdy it looks. This is a film that isn’t hiding at all from its fantasy elements, and instead is fully embracing moments like a guy jumping out of a tower onto the back of a giant eagle because that’s how things work in this world. There’s big, bombastic armor, huge weapons, and everything that you’d want out of an adaptation of a fantasy video game. Rather than “toning it down”, Warcraft is playing at the level of its source material, and I think it might end up surprising a lot of people who are trying to cynically write its obituary.
The film stars Dominic Cooper, Travis Fimmel, Ben Foster, Bne Schnetzer, Ruth Negga, Toby Kebbel, Rob Kazinsky, Daniel Wu, Clancy Brown, and Paula Patton. Warcraft opens in theaters on June 10th.
